Am not sure about the bit about independence. If one were independent what could effect one? Can easily see interdependence, where there is an ebb and flow, that basically resolves into neutrality, which is not the same as indifference. Being of the world but not necessarily in it may be nearer, at least for my limited view. Hope that helps, our views are probably closer than an considering and overly aware of nuance.
