As a practicing Sophist, can turn the argument around, and begin by: Think of speech, which used to be free, before the advent of hate speech, before words could not be said, and what we have lost. As George Orwell said:"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. Between Academia, the press, New York Times, MSNBC, CNN and others, opposing views are not readily accepted. Our rights to self determination are under attack. Putting people in cages was made legal by Obama and no one cared. Can go on from there, but you get the gist.

The problem is both sides are pitching it as a battle for the soul of the Republic and not as a willingness to reach out and compromise where necessary to make any progress at all.

Until compromise becomes an acceptable means and word, we will not leave the status quo that America has grown into. Alas.No matter who wins.
