As some one who has read Hannah Arendt's book The Origins of Totalitarianism, I beg to differ from you. She pointed out the differences between authoritarian regimes and totalitarian ones. Franco's Spain was authoritarian, Mao's China was and remains totalitarian. The basic difference being the right to think for yourself, but to keep it quite, and within ones own family or group, and not act upon, versus being forced to think along with the nation that follows whatever their Fearless Leader decides is the right way. This can prove very discordant, such as when Stalin joined with Hitler in the non-aggression pact.

Wonderful attempt to make the world safe for totalitarianism, just say it no longer is accepted as a category of governmental formation.
