For me, the Middle Ages, were the time when the West began to experiment with how government might work. It would end up creating Feudalism, which eventually evolved to become in America, Federalism. The three branches replacing king, nobility, and religion with a president, premier, legislative group, and judicial. It has worked moderately well, mostly because of all the tinkering done with various aspects during the Middle Ages.
