Have just recently finished Stephen Kotkin’s 2nd volume of his biography of Stalin. Your little drama between the military and the political class, was something that was not possible at that time. The present volume ended with the invasion by Hitler, still awaiting volume 3.

It does show the drama, and the difference between those with responsibilities and those with access to advantages and not nearly the responsibilities.
