Have often wondered about this. As St. Augustine, in what is now Florida, was part of Spain, and Spain was notorious for slaves in the new world.

Could not see how they did not end up going up the coast, to parts of Georgia, and onward to the Carolinas.

My own view is that the White Lion had a cargo that was basically useless to it, so it was looking for a new outlet for its merchandise, as the sailors would have viewed it. They did not get the slaves away from Africa, they were the only booty that was available, and they needed provisions. It seemed like a fair trade, for the period in which the settlers and sailors lived.

Today we would look at it askance, but that is today, and in the United States, and not in Libya.
