Have read that the head of the Islamic army that conquered Egypt, stood in front of the library, saying something to the effect that “If it is in the Koran, we already have the knowledge and if it is not, it is blasphemy.”. Therefore he took a torch and set fire to the library.
It may be true or merely a tale, don’t know for sure.
