If one accepts or believes that they are a totally separate person, with little or no relation to anything going on around them, becoming inert and helpless almost makes sense.
On the other hand, if one conceives that they are a part of a whole, whether it be family, nation or humanity, the sheer interrelationship will compel them to help others, which in time includes themselves.
