In our day and age when slavery is seen for what it was Washington's attitude towards his slaves is unjustified.

During his lifetime, that was mostly not the case. Yes, he could have freed them all, but at the cost of having to sell Mount Vernon, which was not his, and going into penury. Washington was a magnificent first President, he just never tried to be a saint. For myself, do not fault him for being human, though obviously others do.

He did free his slaves at his death, which became a pattern with other slaveholders of his era. Does he get any credit for that?
