It would have been far better had he been defeated in 1916. His insistence that people of different races could not live together destroyed the European balance. Had England and France been forced to bargain from a basically stalemated position, the treaty might have been far better. Instead, as Lloyd George characterized it, it was the not a peace treaty but a twenty year truce.
