My future father-in-law left on my future wife’s 18th birthday. He stayed for that, and then left, gone from her life, in which he had been a significant and intimate part, never to look back. Age and time did not heal the hurt, just made her more numb, and less expecting of anything rom him. He lived up to her expectations. Nice writing.
