My memory says that before the Mongols descended into modern day Iran, they, Iran, had the largest irrigation system prior to modern day California. The slaughter that followed depleted the area of people who could maintain the system of canals and water storage. The canals salted up and filled up from the drainage system falling apart. Even Genghis Khan thought it had been over done.
