Rather than racist, perhaps tribal is a better moniker for the prejudice exhibited in the Middle Ages. One is going back to a time when 80+ percent lived on either on farms or in small towns. Such situations often show a marked prejudice for outsiders. Egged on by the Church and the ruling nobility, is it any wonder people were less than welcoming to any one outside their area, regardless as to why they were there.
