The conscious mind, controls a very small bit of our reality. The subconscious governs most of our existence. There is an awareness there, which causes us to punch a button or some such thing, before it reaches the conscious mind to do so.

Until we learn how the mind works, is may be very different from the brain, the question of free will, welling up, out of the unconscious mind, still remains open, and due to quantum mechanics, quite probable.
