The Crusades are perhaps the most tragic example. If the First Crusade, led mainly by Norman lords and other monarchs, had ended in the disasters that the remaining Crusades were, almost all the misery would have been averted.
The Normans were just to interested in grabbing lands, domains, and titles. They were the super troops for that era, roughly 1050-1150.
