There are greater differences now to then.
Germany and Britain almost formed a trade pact and alliance. Nothing like that has been remotely possible in the last twenty years.

China has a limited window for action. Their population is declining and U. S. Policy is making IT theft more difficult, though not impossible. They are likely to overplay nationalism and get the war going through some low level incident that blows up out of control, not unlike 1914.
